The urine sample had a reserve portion, the GRSA Stewards actually told Mr. Christensen. And this reserve portion went through examination and discovered to have Theobromine.

Mr. Christensen was indeed told of the date, time and place of the inquiry. It would be on June 23, 2010 at 10:00 am at the offices of Greyhound Racing South Australia Limited, 55 Cardigan Street, Angle Park. Those who can be a witness and can help in solving the issue can also come.

Many followers of Mr. Christensen were saddened by the report. They were saddened about Mr. Christensen getting a letter telling him that he will have to attend an inquiry that will be about the urine sample taken from greyhound Amy’s Delight, which urine sample taken actually contained Theobromine.

Well, followers of Mr. Christensen can be saddened by the report. Of course, they have been followers most likely for a long period of time. But then, Mr. Christensen would still be subject to inquiry. Just as the report confirmed, he received a letter telling him that he will have to attend an inquiry regarding the urine sample taken which showed presence of Theobromine. He will still have to attend an inquiry and this could naturally just let him clarify things that could be helpful in proving himself not guilty.

Soon Mr. Christensen will undergo investigation. Soon he will actually get the chance to prove himself not guilty if he wants to. The followers can just look forward to this.

According to some studies, there could be benefits for greyhound owners or trainers in giving their dogs some swabs to enhance their performance. Usually few swabs of certain drugs like Theobromine and Dexamethasone involve cases of positive swabs nowadays.

Fine and Disqualification

From the notes of Greyhound Racing Victoria (GRV), “Greyhounds must be allowed to compete on their merits. Trainers and owners must be allowed to compete in the knowledge that they will only be beaten on merit, and not by a greyhound which has been given a performance enhancing substance. Similarly people betting on greyhound races must be able to be confident that the greyhound they back will perform on its merits. There is no room in the industry for cheats. In addition, for animal welfare reasons, greyhounds should not be raced if they require pain killing or other drugs to optimize performance”.

Thus, although there is no clear, exact reason behind why trainers end up guilty to positive swabs, authorities has already done necessary actions by imposing a rule on positive swabs which could lead to a substantial fine for the trainer and a disqualification possibly for life for the trainer as well as to his or her greyhound.

Stewards convened an inquiry last Friday, 21st of November 2008, basically for the urine samples taken from two greyhounds, first from Pierre Bouchee then next from Young Black Onyx. Both greyhounds swabbed positive to Theobromine.

It was believed that the positive swab from Pierre Bouchee relates back at the Ipswich Greyhound Racing Club in Race 8 where Bouchee placed 3rd. While that of Young Black Onyx’s relates back at the same Ipswich Greyhound Racing Club but in Race 2 where Onyx placed 1st.

Based on evidence from the Racing Science Centre along with tests carried out on greyhound kibble and milk powder provided by Mr. Churchill himself, the said Mr. Churchill was charged under GAR 83 (2) (a) (d) which states;

(2) The owner, trainer or person in charge of a greyhound
(a) nominated to compete in an Event
(d) shall present the greyhound free of any drug

Eventually, Mr. Churchill appealed guilty for charges against him and fined $275 in total. He was also obliged to return all prize money he won previously in races where his greyhounds were found positive to swabs. Due to this, it was half way said that he will lose all claims for the respective placings his greyhound got in races aforementioned.
