Williams was actually thrilled with the 17.07sec in a 290m trial of the returning champion racer, Blue Artisan. It was a great birthday gift for the champion trainer.

Williams said: “It was a very good sprint trial and the main thing is that he’s sound and okay this morning. He responded very well to the treatment we gave his injury which was a relief as he was very sore and swollen after Sheffield, and it didn’t look too good at that stage. I wanted to be sure with him and took him to four different people before starting him off again, but he got a clean bill of health.”

Many fans of Blue Artisan were so happy with how he did in the williamhill.com All England Cup. They were very pleased by the record of 17.07sec in a 290m trial. It was a proof that he is doing fine after being out of action since August for tearing a muscle at Sheffield.

But for sure, they were still praying for complete recovery of the greyhound. Blue Artisan, although performed well and thrilled Williams, might still be having some issues while performing. He was very sore and swollen after Sheffield according to Williams and it may really take few good performances from him before everyone can say he has completely recovered. But he will make it for sure.

The race six was indeed the most awaited because of the Gardens 400 meter track record holder, Northern Echo. The track record holder was confirmed to be actually coming back to Newcastle for the race six, the Woy Woy Poultry Stake.

The Reg Gardoll-trained Northern Echo managed to set the time standard of 22.46 for the circuit. A lot of experts have said that his time will stand the test of time. And trainer of the son of Hallucinate and Silent Melody with 11 races out of 21 starts must be proud to have him once again in Newcastle.

Well, sports betting enthusiasts have shown great support to Northern Echo just before the big race. The greyhound’s job was also made easier with Kiss Me Declan’s scratching giving him clearer way out from the boxes.

The race two was also a much-awaited event because of Marina’s Limerick. The greyhound in good form was confirmed running to beat the very talented Beachley Lane. Marina’s Limerick was made best bet of the race by a form analyst.

Form analyst said: “The classy MARINAS LIMERICK (8) steps up in distance which is ideal, good beginner with early speed that can carve over to the lead & run away with this, clearly the one to beat.”

The race eight was a much-awaited event as well because of Clear Choice. The greyhound was anticipated to be going to the race to win.

Form analyst said: “CLEAR CHOICE (2) ran an absolute bottler when beaten in flying time here last start, clearly the best run of his career, strikes an easier line up, the one to beat.”

The improvements to the catching pen area of the track were believed to be already completed. The greyhounds can already have a longer run-in at the completion of the races, the runners can have more time for pulling up.

The work on the new 400 meter boxes was said to be still in progress and that the Friday and Saturday meetings are going to use the original 413 meter starting point of the track. But most likely it will be done in time.

Bad weather indeed made it tough for the builders to work on the improvements but then everything must be completed early next week. And the builders would be doing what’s necessary for sure.

And just after the week off for the improvements, The Gardens will be back as a better track with its catching pen area improved.

The most notable thing with the return of The Gardens on track is the program it will offer that will feature appearance in race seven, the Forsythes Stake, of Velocity Cloud. The new 515 meter track record holder will try in the middle distance course of 600 meters of course for champion trainer Jason MacKay. The last time the greyhound was at The Gardens, she managed to record a breathtaking 29.23 for the 515 meter course. She surprised everyone present with her time, actually eclipsing that of Group One winner Knocka Norris.

Velocity Cloud is owned by the Velocity Lodge syndicate. And she is managed by Steve Williams, Queensland businessman who has been greatly involved with both the sunshine state and greyhound rearing property at Neath.

As of now, there are several greyhounds to be considered for the title. Several options indeed that will succeed last year’s winner Lenson Joker.

First on the list is actually Fear Zafonic, that according to one insider, looks to have the edge now. And for such insider, “He was just touched off in the Derby, but has come back to win the Betfair Derby at Yarmouth. He had some wins in the early part of the year, too.”

But fans of Zafonic are not yet that complacent about their greyhound on bagging home the title. At Nottingham, for the upcoming Eclipse, award nominees Lenson Bolt and Eye Onthe Storm will battle which may then change the situation in regards to the race for the title on being the Greyhound of the Year.

Next on the list is most likely Derby winner Kinda Ready, the leading hurdler Platinumlancelot. Followed possibly by the Glenroe Ginger and then by Ballymac Ruso. The latter should have improved his profile by aid of the All England Cup at Newcastle.

Well it’s still quite a long way to go for all the candidates for the Greyhound of the Year title. Yes, there are still some major events happening next month that can greatly affect the race for the title. All of the greyhound racing and betting fans’ should still keep keen eyes on the possible things that may happen. The race is not yet even close to being over.

Matt Dartnall-trained Ballymac Ruso went round in 29.23sec (4.61sec). While Barrie Draper’s charged seemed to have already warmed up for the William Hill All England Cup when he posted a great 28.85sec (-40) in a solo trial on Saturday at Newcastle.

It is just worth mentioning that the Cup title holder during the final of the Cashmans Irish Laurels at Corkseven actually finished third behind Sevenheads Bay, was able to make a smart 4.59sec sectional possible as he tried to accustom himself once again with the track and of course at the same time reacquainted himself with the scene way back in his 2008 victory at the same event. He is anticipated to once again make it at the same track and event.

While Best’s kennelmates also showcased what they got. Farloe Rocket just clocked 29.06sec (4.79sec sectional).

Pat Flaherty’s Greenwell Viper also was not behind in showing some skills. The greyhound actually set the standard for posting 29.18sec in the top heat at the Cup trial stakes on the evening card. Viper led at halfway and powered away just to overcome another in the name of Elwick Joaquin by actually almost five lengths in 29.18sec.

So far, the greyhounds mentioned are the most notable for their performance at William Will All England Cup trial. They made sure being a part of greyhound racing and betting history.

First, the Matt Dartnall-trained Ballymac Ruso was believed to be in good shape and form but then has not run in the said place since getting the third place in the Sussex Cup decider in July at Hove. It was actually another race where he started as leader of the market. And in August at the Irish Derby, he has been on the sidelines since having a third round exit.

Along with him was the son of Ballymac Maeve. Dartnall also booked the said racer to have a first look round the North East circuit before Saturday’s BAGS meeting and will have half of the day on Monday to arrive into a decision. The trainer should be into a decision before entries for the £10,000-to-the-winner competition close.

Then, Boherna Best, the holder of the Cup title, most likely have reacquainted himself with the scene of his 2008 victory at the same event. The greyhound star may showcase same performance like what he showed way back in 2008.

Trainer Barrie Draper confirmed that there are no problems with regards to Best’s shape and form despite his exertions in the Irish Laurels, in which he ended up bagging the third place during Saturday’s final at Cork.

Along with Best were the kennelmates Farloe Rocket, this year’s finalist in Gymcrack, and the puppy Magna Rocket. Definitely, he got his kennelmates with him as he traveled to Tyneside.

Ellis is being worked out by Steve Race with the hopes of being ready for the William Hill All England Cup heats at the track just a week later. The greyhound was remembered having a broken metatarsal during summer and just recently having a bout of coughing and a strained hock. But despite everything that he has gone through, he was able to please trainer Race by having a time of 17.92sec (normal) in a 305m sprint trial before racing on Monday at Nottingham.

Race seemed really optimistic with regards to Ellis possible performance at Newcastle all because of what the greyhound has shown at Nottingham. The trainer actually said that, “it’s been a bit of a nightmare with him really”. And in addition, “and I’m probably a couple of weeks behind where I’d like to be. But I couldn’t have asked more from the Nottingham trial and hopefully he’ll carry that forward to Newcastle. Obviously he’s going to be a bit short of his best going into the competition, but I’ve got to get the runs into him because I want to go for the [Betfred] Eclipse at Nottingham after that”.

A greyhound racer may actually get injuries and illnesses at any time. Perfect example of which is the case of Ellis, the greyhound got broken metatarsal and then after a bout of coughing and a strained hock. But then a greyhound racer is expected to still come out a winner after sickness and Race’s greyhound didn’t fail to.
