This Week Morning Trial Session of Crayford Cancelled Due to Persistent Rain

Yes, because of persistent rain, the morning trial session of Crayford was called off. The session was supposed to be on Wednesday but then the continuous rain did cause mockery to Bags card of Tuesday.

A bias that was undeniable and that was indeed towards the wide runners seemed to have created domination in the card by the greyhounds drawn in traps four, five and six and seemed to have made chaos among inside runners being sent off then at double-figure odds.

“We’ve been hit hard by the rain from first thing and the salt still in the track has resulted in the inside quickly becoming sloppy,” Racing manager Danny Rayment said.

Rayment seen that things turned out to be unfavorable for those involved but on a positive note tried to set things right.

“We’ve monitored the situation throughout from a safety point of view, and had no reported injuries going into the latter races,” Rayment said. “Of course it’s far from ideal, but at least everyone cottoned on early and the betting shows have reflected the bias.”

And specifically with regards to the cancellation of trials session, Rayment gave explanation too.

“Obviously we want to give the track staff every chance to get things right, and our next priority becomes Thursday’s afternoon Bags meeting,” Rayment said. “Hopefully by then things will be back on an even keel for the rest of the week.”

Rayment might have realized that there would be certain things that would disrupt their operations and even cause them some troubles. These things, if they are meant to happen, they will happen no matter what. Thus, what is important is, people in control, like Rayment in particular, should do what is necessary to straighten things up. Certain things can’t be stopped from happening, thus the task would be on the people in control.

Greyhound Survivors of Gerogery Bushfire Now Need a Home

They’ve been in the racetrack, have actually entertained a lot of greyhound racing fans and even bettors. But now, they seem invisible to many of these people, no one seems willing to give them a home.

Solly, Anna, Cyan and Daisy are all survivors of Gerogery bushfire. The fire almost killed them but luckily they were able to escape and be rescued. But now, they are facing the misfortune of losing a home.

The greyhounds lost their rearing and racing kennel, which served as their home for a long time. It was really an unfortunate happening, some good greyhounds have been into a tragedy.

Now dog lover Mary-Jane Jaksetic, who looks after the welfare of the greyhounds, said, “it is so sad, ……because they had become a liability rather than an asset”.

And Jaksetic added, “the old girl raced and had a litter of pups but the other three never even made it to the racetrack. I took them in hoping that I could find them a home. I have been advertising and have had any number of calls but so far no takers”.

Jaksetic thinks that people may actually have a wrong perception of the four greyhounds.

“They see them with muzzles and think they have to be vicious when in fact they are anything but,” Jaksetic said.

In addition, she said, “they are the biggest sooks, they are low maintenance and the original couch potato. I’m a dog trainer and have dealt with aggressive dogs but you can do anything to this lot and they’ll still lick you”.

Jaksetic now hopes that the greyhounds will finally have a new home. She believes they are worth keeping, they are a rare kind of greyhounds.

May there be someone who finally adopt Solly, Anna, Cyan and Daisy. May they find a home for themselves. And these, we really just hope and pray.

Canberra Bushfires Caused Death of 13 Retired Greyhounds

Yes, the bushfires that took place in Canberra caused the death of 13 retired greyhounds. Sad news indeed, but it is true. It exactly took place morning of December 18 in the South of Canberra, towards the east of the Monaro Highway. The uncontrollable fires were so huge then, just enough to claim life of these 13 retired greyhounds.

According to the news, the fires burnt 9000 hectares of bush land and then of the said greyhounds, all owned by the Perrin family.

The family lost some good greyhounds and aside from them lost also the family business and a sawmill that was uninsured.

Lindsay Perrin from the Perrin family has actually said, “the whole time my dogs were burning, it was a nightmare. I lost 13 retired greyhounds”, and that “I managed to save five of them but to hear them burn was just a nightmare, there was absolutely nothing we could do”.

While near Richmond in New South Wales, in Londonderry, the fires burnt right up to plenty of greyhound properties however no property was reported officially lost.

The fires just resulted to a tragedy causing the opening of the Richmond greyhound track as a refuge for greyhounds under fire threat and should be relocated and be safely housed as soon as possible.

The fire threat in the area was confirmed under control several hours after the incident. But of course, it resulted to a catastrophe that caused threat to properties and most especially claimed the life of many greyhounds.

Now, the Greyhound Community would like to extend help to everyone affected by the fires, most especially to Perrin family. The family lost their living, but more importantly, they lost some beloved greyhounds that absolutely have been a part of them for years. They badly need help from the community.

Program to Help Retrain Retired Greyhounds Launched

Currently, there is a good number of retired greyhounds at Tarrengower Prison, Maldon. And so in connection to this, Deputy Premier and Minister for Racing Rob Hulls launched program called Prison Pet Partnership program. It is Victoria’s second program which aims to help retrain retired greyhounds at the said prison in Maldon.

The program has been proven effective. It is already in place at Dhurringile Prison, Murchison and has significantly helped rehabilitate the greyhounds there and provided prisoners the chance to be into positive activities.

Hulls greatly believe on the traits of greyhounds. They can have a competitive career, be into racing. But they must be closely monitored all throughout. It seems that they can be into so many things with good guidance. According to him, “greyhounds are strong, energetic and athletic animals as racing dogs, but once their competitive career is over they need to be trained to adjust to their new environment so they can live out the rest of their lives as household pets”.

The program will be like a blessing for greyhounds, specifically for the retired ones and the prisoned. They will be exposed to positive activities. But first, they need to experience little hardship by going through a six-week disciplinary program of integration and obedience which will be under the guidance of the Greyhound Racing Victoria or the GRV.

At Dhurringile Prison, Murchison, the program has been successful with 68 rehabilitated greyhounds back into the society. It started to be implemented at the said prison just two years ago, to be exact last September of 2007.

Hopefully, the program becomes also successful at Tarrengower Prison, Maldon. May there be also a good number of greyhounds rehabilitated and be back into the society. They deserve to be back to life, they deserve to be a part again of the society that once really welcomed them.

Scratching Rules on Trial Dogs to be Enforced by GHHRA Stewards

It was confirmed, the Stewards of Greyhound and Harness Racing Regulatory Authority (GHHRA) will be enforcing scratching rules on trial dogs. GHHRA Stewards now would like to inform everyone, owners and trainers, that it was finalized yesterday, Wednesday, 3rd of December 2008, that there will be enforcement of compulsory 10 day incapacitation stand-downs on all scratchings. This of course will affect entire New South Wales.

Actually, there’s already a “10 day rule” on New South Wales however it has only been applied to official race scratchings and greyhounds scratched from qualifying trials have been allowed to scratch without penalty. So now, New South Wales GHHRA finalized to organize things and decided to somehow impose a better rule.

Finally, effective 1st of January next year, 2009, in accord with Rule 23(4), NSW GHRRA Stewards will impose a 10 day incapacitation certificate on all greyhounds scratched from all qualifying trials. This of course to be mainly applied in New South Wales.

Right now, various reactions, positive as well as negative reactions are to be expected from individuals to be affected by the scratching rule. But of course, no rule was made to create chaos. Every rule has a purpose and all for the betterment of the society and of the people in it.

Greyhounds: The Most Safest Racers

Of all dogs, greyhounds are the most safest racers. Aside from being fast, greyhounds are also not aggressive and so they are tolerable.

From the records of University of Pennsylvania School of Veterinary Medicine study by the Center for the Interaction of Animals, much maligned greyhound is rated the most docile or least aggressive canine by breed which eventually make him fit and safe for possible races.

The study involved researchers from the University of Pennsylvania. The researchers actually have questioned 6,000 dog owners. Other dog breeds that scored low for aggression include Basset Hounds, Golden Retrievers, Labradors and Siberian Huskies. Other dog breeds scored average or below average marks for hostility toward stranger and these include Rottweilers, Pit Bulls and Rhodesian Ridgebacks.

By record, greyhounds are the most docile or least aggressive toward humans and other dogs. And the most vicious or let’s just say the most aggressive are the Daschunds. They are the first on the list of 33 dog breeds that were rated for their aggression.

Based on the results, Dr. James Serpell, one of the researchers from the study then have said that smaller breeds tend to be more genetically inclined towards aggressive behavior than bigger breeds.

Trainers Not Taking Their Greyhounds To Which They Were Drawn Still a Problem in Victoria

In Victoria Greyhound Racing (GRV), trainers who are not taking their greyhounds to the races for which they were drawn still a problem. In fact, just recently another trainer of the greyhound identified as “Darius Bale” was added to the long list of the said trainers.

The trainer that was in-charge of “Darius Bale” was known to be Mrs. Kylie Hunt. Supposedly, “Darius Bale” was to be presented for its engagement in Race 7 at the Shepparton GRC meeting Monday, 13th of October 2008. Mrs. K. Hunt failed to present “Darius Bale” to the said engagement. This happening eventually led to an inquiry by stewards last Monday, 17th of November 2008.

During the inquiry, stewards heard evidence from Mrs. K. Hunt and tabled a Transcript of Evidence. Then after considering all evidence tabled, stewards decided to charge Mrs. K. Hunt in violation of GAR86(o) of the Greyhounds Australasia Rules in that as the Trainer of “Darius Bale” she negligently failed to ensure that the greyhound was presented for its engagement in Race 7 at the Shepparton GRC meeting Monday, 13th of October 2008.

Mrs. K. Hunt didn’t deny anything and pleaded guilty to the charge. GRV Stewards found Mrs. K. Hunt guilty to the charge against her and so oblige her to give out $150 as fine.

In the course of inquiry, it was discovered that Mrs. K. Hunt is a partner of Peter Hunt who was also a subject of several inquiries few months ago due to same issue, not presenting greyhounds to race. Same kennel was being run by Mrs. K. Hunt and Peter Hunt.

The kennel is now racing just under Mrs. Hunt’s name as Peter Hunt received a three month disqualification for refusing to attend two separate inquiries in to failing to produce greyhounds.

Thus, because of these things, it is strongly suggested that GRV Stewards need to look more closely at the present arrangements, where trainers who are suspended or disqualified can simply transfer the greyhounds or kennel to their wife’s or partner’s name. Better yet, GRV Stewards must try now considering stricter rules relating to transfer of greyhounds or kennels due to suspension or disqualification.
