Some fans of Bate-Forte tandem were saddened by the news. Just recently, the two lost two companions in racing, Velocette and Amity Bale, that both retired because of injury.

Bate was not penalized with suspension or disqualification because of the result of the swab inquiry but then was ordered to fine $3 000 and then not to get a claim for the $21 500 prize money for Dyna Forte’s SA Derby victory. He actually pleaded guilty before the GRSA Stewards.

On the night of the Derby, the first three placers went through a routine urinary swab analysis. Beer Time of Matcott, ended up getting the 2nd place, and Dentax Bale of Bate as well, ended up getting 3rd place, turned negative to drug swab. It was only the Paul Wheeler-owned Dyna Forte that turned positive. The dog actually went through two tests, the first showed irregularities and second confirmed presence of a prohibited substance called Procaine.

Because of the result of the swab inquiry, confirming Dyna Forte being positive to drug swab, Beer Time that was the 2nd placer then, is now the winner of the Derby and the $21 500 to-the-winner-prize. Dentax Bale, the 3rd placer, is currently the 2nd placer. Through the said dog, Bate and Wheeler earn an extra $3 200. The 3rd placer now is Mick The Mozz of Andrea Dailly, that was 4th placer then. Trainer Dailly earns $3 150.

Before Dyna Forte, El Galo of Jason Thompson became a group race winner positive to drug swab.

Velocette actually suffered from a dropped back muscle in a Group 1 Melbourne Cup heat just last November 12 and then after was decided to be retired to stud.

For the record, the champion sprinter is a winner of five Group races which include the Group 1 Australian Cup. Ron McCullagh, his breeder, definitely went through the rides of his life.

McCullagh is a great breeder considering he really prepared Velocette for his first eight starts before moving him to be with close mate, Graeme Bate. “I remember him as a 17-month-old pup clocking sub-30 seconds at Sandown in a trial”, and that “things got busy at work, and there were some good races coming up… I didn’t have time to cart him around”, he said.

Velocette changed the life of McCullagh and also of his wife Judith by being at full throttle conquering 26 races from 65 starts and cumulating $379,650 – ninth on the all-time stakes list. He has actually achieved a lot.

But of course, there will always a downside. “We’ve had bad luck with some good ones, but we’ve hung in there,” McCullagh admitted.

Velocette is well known as the son of the Bombastic Shiraz, a champion sire that bagged home the 2003 Australian as well as Victorian Greyhound of the Year awards.

At this point, it is not yet clear where the champion sprinter will stand at stud or even at what price most likely. The only thing that’s clear is, he will still be very famous. And of course, he will continue to be the sprinter that everyone loves and admires.

Event comes with a prize money with a total of $250,000. $175,000 will go to the winner, $50,000 to the second placer, and $25,000 to the third placer. A lot of things are expected from the greyhound and trainer participants so watch out!
