Eden Star was a racing greyhound to train when able to perform very well to win in the £6,000 Betfair Laurels final over 470m. Boherna Best to Retain His Title?

In general, Boherna Best is the favourite to keep his title in £10,000 William Hill All England Cup final on next Wednesday. Well the reason for this is most likely the one of a kind, unfogettable performance by the Barrie Draper-trained greyhound. It simply showed greater endurance over Ballymac Ruso in the third semi-final that is over 480m, at Newcastle on a Tuesday.

The trainer himself, Barrie Draper, believes that the connections would have been settled for second happily and the qualification after Best must have been bumped at the first bend for pacing up well after a good beginning. However, the greyhound was into something else and this was to chase down Ruso.

Best was actually able to close in amazingly along the back straight, be challenging at the final bend and forge close home in 28.43sec (+10), for a half length victory.

Draper simply said last time that, “obviously he was sick when we had to pull him out of the Irish Derby and he’s really just finding his race form now”, and that, “Owen [McKenna] got him to the Laurels final at Cork and he’s come back well although he is struggling to adjust to the different way of starting, particularly where the hare is when the traps open”.

Draper is in high hopes that Best will be better in the final, though actually in such sort of class things are little harder and more complicated. And the trainer has other good finalist, Farloe Rocket, that is a strong racer and will really go out of his way in case something happens to the outside racers.

Draper will never be out of the scene considering all of his and his greyhounds’ achievements. He is someone who will be always a part, no doubt to this.

Greyhound stars traveled to Newcastle for William Hill All England Cup trial. Just on a Saturday, the beaten favorite of 2009′s Derby final, Ballymac Ruso, traveled to the said city to try own luck at the trial. Same as Boherna Best, the Cup title holder, was on course to prove he is the only one deserving to hold the title of the Cup.

First, the Matt Dartnall-trained Ballymac Ruso was believed to be in good shape and form but then has not run in the said place since getting the third place in the Sussex Cup decider in July at Hove. Then, Boherna Best, the holder of the Cup title, most likely have reacquainted himself with the scene of his 2008 victory at the same event. The greyhound star may showcase same performance like what he showed way back in 2008.

Trainer Barrie Draper confirmed that there are no problems with regards to Best’s shape and form despite his exertions in the Irish Laurels, in which he ended up bagging the third place during Saturday’s final at Cork.

Along with Best were the kennelmates Farloe Rocket, this year’s finalist in Gymcrack, and the puppy Magna Rocket. Definitely, he got his kennelmates with him as he traveled to Tyneside.

Draper Revealed if Boherna Best is His Best Dog and if How He Sees the Future of the Sport

In his interview with Ralph Ellis, Barrie Draper made two interesting revelations. He had revealed if Boherna Best is his best acquired and trained dog and if how he actually sees the future of the sport greyhound racing.

First revelation, Boherna Best is still on his way to being Draper’s best acquired and trained dog. “He’d be up there”, says Draper. For now, Draper can’t yet say he’s the best. Once he had one that was second in the derby, and he considered him as his fastest dog ever. But of course, he can’t compare him to Boherna Best. “It’s like boxers – is Ricky Hatton a better fighter than Nigel Benn, say?”, asks by Draper.

For Draper, tracks along with circumstances change and so he can’t really say one is a better dog than the other. What’s important for Draper now is Boherna Best is a good dog and he’s really glad to train him and have him for the races.

Second revelation, Draper sees the future of the sport as not so good. For Draper, BAGS racing has its pros and cons. It keeps the tracks open but at some point it keeps the overall standard lower. He believes that everyone who’s into the sport must try and improve the races so as to have quality rather than quantity. As if not, the sport may vanish in an instant. Most especially that now training dogs is a long way down the priorities of many basically because of the numerous faltering economies.

Ralph Ellis got a chance to talk to popular Barrie Draper, trainer of Boherna Best who is 2.12 favourite to be named Greyhound for the Year.

One of the most remembered during the talk is that one point when Barrie Draper already talks about his dog’s potential to bag the Greyhound of the Year title. For him, Boherna Best has the potential, he had 18 races and finished first in 14 of them. He’s been unplaced only once. Not to mention that he has won three category one races and so has given everyone a totally exciting season.

Barrie Draper has also mentioned that Boherna Best is a strong type of dog. He was only two in August. Boherna Best was incomparable to other young dogs who tried to get in with old ones. He was pure exception. He was able to get in with old ones effortlessly. And for this, he is just right to bag the Greyhound of the Year title.

Above all, it seemed like that Boherna Best could still improve and make good runs until the end of the year. Though Barrie Draper admitted Boherna Best is a superbly bred, it should not end from that fact. As his trainer, he could still make Boherna Best perform far better.

Bubbly Totti for the Greyhound of the Year Title

The title Greyhound of the Year is the most sought-after title. All contenders are vying for it which then makes all greyhound trainers and bettors look after for the December awards ceremony.
