As of now, there are several greyhounds to be considered for the title. Several options indeed that will succeed last year’s winner Lenson Joker.

First on the list is actually Fear Zafonic, that according to one insider, looks to have the edge now. And for such insider, “He was just touched off in the Derby, but has come back to win the Betfair Derby at Yarmouth. He had some wins in the early part of the year, too.”

But fans of Zafonic are not yet that complacent about their greyhound on bagging home the title. At Nottingham, for the upcoming Eclipse, award nominees Lenson Bolt and Eye Onthe Storm will battle which may then change the situation in regards to the race for the title on being the Greyhound of the Year.

Next on the list is most likely Derby winner Kinda Ready, the leading hurdler Platinumlancelot. Followed possibly by the Glenroe Ginger and then by Ballymac Ruso. The latter should have improved his profile by aid of the All England Cup at Newcastle.

Well it’s still quite a long way to go for all the candidates for the Greyhound of the Year title. Yes, there are still some major events happening next month that can greatly affect the race for the title. All of the greyhound racing and betting fans’ should still keep keen eyes on the possible things that may happen. The race is not yet even close to being over.

The trainer himself, Barrie Draper, believes that the connections would have been settled for second happily and the qualification after Best must have been bumped at the first bend for pacing up well after a good beginning. However, the greyhound was into something else and this was to chase down Ruso.

Best was actually able to close in amazingly along the back straight, be challenging at the final bend and forge close home in 28.43sec (+10), for a half length victory.

Draper simply said last time that, “obviously he was sick when we had to pull him out of the Irish Derby and he’s really just finding his race form now”, and that, “Owen [McKenna] got him to the Laurels final at Cork and he’s come back well although he is struggling to adjust to the different way of starting, particularly where the hare is when the traps open”.

Draper is in high hopes that Best will be better in the final, though actually in such sort of class things are little harder and more complicated. And the trainer has other good finalist, Farloe Rocket, that is a strong racer and will really go out of his way in case something happens to the outside racers.

Draper will never be out of the scene considering all of his and his greyhounds’ achievements. He is someone who will be always a part, no doubt to this.

Matt Dartnall-trained Ballymac Ruso went round in 29.23sec (4.61sec). While Barrie Draper’s charged seemed to have already warmed up for the William Hill All England Cup when he posted a great 28.85sec (-40) in a solo trial on Saturday at Newcastle.

It is just worth mentioning that the Cup title holder during the final of the Cashmans Irish Laurels at Corkseven actually finished third behind Sevenheads Bay, was able to make a smart 4.59sec sectional possible as he tried to accustom himself once again with the track and of course at the same time reacquainted himself with the scene way back in his 2008 victory at the same event. He is anticipated to once again make it at the same track and event.

While Best’s kennelmates also showcased what they got. Farloe Rocket just clocked 29.06sec (4.79sec sectional).

Pat Flaherty’s Greenwell Viper also was not behind in showing some skills. The greyhound actually set the standard for posting 29.18sec in the top heat at the Cup trial stakes on the evening card. Viper led at halfway and powered away just to overcome another in the name of Elwick Joaquin by actually almost five lengths in 29.18sec.

So far, the greyhounds mentioned are the most notable for their performance at William Will All England Cup trial. They made sure being a part of greyhound racing and betting history.

First, the Matt Dartnall-trained Ballymac Ruso was believed to be in good shape and form but then has not run in the said place since getting the third place in the Sussex Cup decider in July at Hove. It was actually another race where he started as leader of the market. And in August at the Irish Derby, he has been on the sidelines since having a third round exit.

Along with him was the son of Ballymac Maeve. Dartnall also booked the said racer to have a first look round the North East circuit before Saturday’s BAGS meeting and will have half of the day on Monday to arrive into a decision. The trainer should be into a decision before entries for the £10,000-to-the-winner competition close.

Then, Boherna Best, the holder of the Cup title, most likely have reacquainted himself with the scene of his 2008 victory at the same event. The greyhound star may showcase same performance like what he showed way back in 2008.

Trainer Barrie Draper confirmed that there are no problems with regards to Best’s shape and form despite his exertions in the Irish Laurels, in which he ended up bagging the third place during Saturday’s final at Cork.

Along with Best were the kennelmates Farloe Rocket, this year’s finalist in Gymcrack, and the puppy Magna Rocket. Definitely, he got his kennelmates with him as he traveled to Tyneside.

At Monmore last Monday, Ballymac Ruso, Matt Dartnall’s Irish Derby finalist, returned with an impressive run in a heat of the Cotswold Scaffolding 480.

Despite the odds, the two-year-old racer has shown great pace to be able to get back into combat and score from Farloe Magic.

Other four-bend heats were dominated and won by Droopys Mikel and Marbeck Wonder, with the latter being the fastest in 27.87. Genesis Dream set claim to a second Monmore triumph in the heats of the six-bend in 37.86.

Mark Wallis’s bitch, already a winner of the Spring Festival 630, had an all the way victory and was the fastest compared to other heat winners like Romeo Llan and Boherbee Ben.

While Swift Ninja, TV Trophy finalist, made a breaking return after just a recent lay off. At the Coventry St Leger, Michael Harris’ dog showed much potential with a smooth semi-final win and fastest-of-the-night 42.60 victory. On Sunday, at Coventry St Leger’s final, he will be one of the best six-bend racers.
