Cindeen Shelby Declared Winner of 2009 AGRA Australian Greyhound of the Year Title

The great little chaser Cindeen Shelby was actually declared by the Australian Greyhound Racing Association at the infield of the Cannington Race Complex in West Australia as winner of the much coveted 2009 AGRA Australian Greyhound of the Year title. Michelle Parkinson and trainer Jackie Greenough seemed surprised then about their greyhound being considered as perfect choice for the title but of course also seemed happy and thrilled.

It was Sky Channel’s Peter Davis who actually gave the award to Parkinson and Greenough. And the two, well naturally, they expressed their surprise and at the same time expressed their happiness and thrill regarding their greyhound’s accomplishment. They knew then that El Galo and Amity Bale also achieved a lot the previous year and it was in a way a surprise for them. But they were happy and thrilled indeed. Most likely, they also felt then that their Cindeen Shelby should also win.

“It has been such a fantastic year, to race Cindeen Shelby was brilliant for us,” Parkinson said. “I think she deserved to win, she is a great little chaser who always gives her all. I’d like to congratulate both Kelvyn and Jackie Greenough for the wonderful job they have done with ‘Shelby’ all year.”

Greenough also expressed good things about looking after Cindeen Shelby. And for this trainer, Cindeen Shelby can be considered just hard chasing, placid and a fantastic kennel dog.

A panel of judges consisting then of administrators and media representatives from each state, from print, radio and television was actually responsible for the selection of the winner of such prestigious title. The panel was asked to allocate votes 3, 2 and 1 to three finalists in sequence. This panel of judges was of course responsible for Cindeen Shelby being selected as the winner of 2009 AGRA Australian Greyhound of the Year title.

Graeme Bate and Dyna Forte Lost SA Derby Title Due to Positive Drug Swab

Yes, the famous trainer Graeme Bate and dog under his care Dyna Forte just lost a SA Derby title due to a positive drug swab. The trainer was found guilty by the GRSA Stewards of a positive drug swab taken from the Group 3 SA Derby winner of 2009, Dyna Forte.

Some fans of Bate-Forte tandem were saddened by the news. Just recently, the two lost two companions in racing, Velocette and Amity Bale, that both retired because of injury.

Bate was not penalized with suspension or disqualification because of the result of the swab inquiry but then was ordered to fine $3 000 and then not to get a claim for the $21 500 prize money for Dyna Forte’s SA Derby victory. He actually pleaded guilty before the GRSA Stewards.

On the night of the Derby, the first three placers went through a routine urinary swab analysis. Beer Time of Matcott, ended up getting the 2nd place, and Dentax Bale of Bate as well, ended up getting 3rd place, turned negative to drug swab. It was only the Paul Wheeler-owned Dyna Forte that turned positive. The dog actually went through two tests, the first showed irregularities and second confirmed presence of a prohibited substance called Procaine.

Because of the result of the swab inquiry, confirming Dyna Forte being positive to drug swab, Beer Time that was the 2nd placer then, is now the winner of the Derby and the $21 500 to-the-winner-prize. Dentax Bale, the 3rd placer, is currently the 2nd placer. Through the said dog, Bate and Wheeler earn an extra $3 200. The 3rd placer now is Mick The Mozz of Andrea Dailly, that was 4th placer then. Trainer Dailly earns $3 150.

Amity Bale as November’s Greyhound of the Month

The Greyhound of the Month for November 2009 of AGRA is Amity Bale, the New South Wales owned and Victorian trained stayer. She is indeed a Graeme Bate trained black bitch that for five months had sensational races which ended with two Group 2 finals and a runner up place in another in the previous month.

November, started with a great victory in the Group 2 Hume Cup final. The superstar bitch did not only manage to dominate the final effortlessly but also made it to break the Meadows track record at the same time. Then at Wentworth Park, at the Summer Cup heats, she won in another final having the fastest time of 42.14.

Next it was a week later after the said win when she made it at the Group race that was her sixth in a row for the fast finishing Forty Twenty. It was also her nine straight win.

Then, back in Melbourne, Amity Bale participated at the Bold Trease Carnival Cup. She actually started as $1.70 favourite and eventually ended winning the third place in a fast of 42.08. She was behind Drill ‘em.

The previous month can be considered a very competitive month for Amity Bale. It was full of group races that really challenged her to show off what she got. She did great the previous month. Thus, it is not surprising now why she is the Greyhound of the Month for the said month, November.

But Amity Bale is not alone in celebrating now as she was actually recognized along with Paul Wheeler & Graeme Bate. And just to mention, at this point she is one with Cindeen Shelby, Dyna Lachlan, Red Shilling, Trew Millions, High Earner, Mantra Lad, Dana Beatrice, Miss Slick, Gunnadoo Magic and Velocette, the other AGRA Greyhound of the Month winners for 2009.

Drill ‘Em Ended Amity Bale’s Exceptional Winning Streak

Yes, it is really something surprising to know but it’s true, Drill ‘Em ended Amity Bale’s exceptional winning streak that produced nice race victories. The star, sired by 2005 Bold Trease Carnival Cup winner Texas Gold, was able to take out the $36,000 Group 2 Bold Trease Carnival Cup at Sandown Park last week.

Drill ‘Em indeed came rushing from box four to get a lead and then win in 42.08 seconds. He was backed into $7.50.

Owner Neil Rowe said that, “it’s a huge win” and that, “we never thought we’d have a greyhound capable of running against dogs of this caliber, but obviously Drill ‘Em is”. Drill ‘Em now, for the record, has won 11 of his 28 starts and garnered a total of $70, 730 in prizemoney.

Drill ‘Em also beaten the star Next Top Model by 3/4 of a length. Amity Bale on the other hand, by 4 1/2 lengths away in third.

A lot of greyhound racing and betting enthusiasts did not expect that a greyhound like Drill ‘Em can run against and even beat a phenomenal winner. But of course, what is only constant in this world is change. May be yesterday, it was such phenomenal winner, but now it is a greyhound just like Drill ‘Em.

It is a lesson learned. Any greyhound can come out rushing from a box, get a lead and then win the event he or she is into. It won’t matter if in the past, he or she was not able to conquer events and bagged home lots of money. If it is his or her time to win, then it will happen despite all the odds. It is just a matter of chance, a matter of time. Of course Drill ‘Em has just got his.

Event comes with a prize money with a total of $250,000. $175,000 will go to the winner, $50,000 to the second placer, and $25,000 to the third placer.
