Unfortunately, Sky’s coverage of UK greyhound racing might end because of the current deal that is set to expire at the end of this year, 2009. If it will be renewed or not, it is still for us to find out. For the record, Sky has been providing coverage services of UK greyhound racing for 15 years and the broadcasting company has been so good in doing so.
Of course, the GRA has something to do with the issue. Stephen Rea, the spokesman of GRA said, “we have got to a little later in the year than might usually have been the case”, “but Clive [Feltham, GRAMD] and Dave Lawrence [Sky Sports producer] are talking about what sort of schedule can be put forward for 2010 and onwards, and when that is completed I’m sure the rest will take care of itself”. And additionally, “it is a difficult time to attract sponsors, but no track has come forward and said that they do not want a Sky meeting for that reason and there are promoters out there who are prepared to put forward new races with substantial prize funds”.
So far, what greyhound racing and betting enthusiasts can just expect is that Sky may just continue with their coverage of UK greyhound racing as they are keen to do so despite a deal is about to end at the end of this year, 2009.
It is worth mentioning that Dave Lawrence, Sky producer, was remembered saying that he hopes to maintain the 36 program schedule and if possible try out some new tracks.
Greyhound racing and betting enthusiasts, particularly those of UK’s should not despair or feel alarmed about possibility of Sky ending own coverage of UK greyhound racing. It is true but then GRA and even Sky might just do something good about it.
