It came as a surprise for many greyhound racing fans and even bettors but then it is confirmed to be something as true, Paddy Power will not anymore sponsor the 2010 Irish Derby.
Just after the re-emergence of William Hill being sponsors of Wimbledon’s Derby, the Irish Greyhound Board revealed that the Paddy Power Bookmakers will not anymore sponsor the 2010 Irish Derby. It was actually a big revelation for some followers of Irish greyhound racing.
Well, for the past ten years, the Paddy Power Bookmakers has been sponsoring the Irish Derby and in this span of time, the Classic was built up to be the most valuable and significant competition in the world. Because the said betting firm has been around, the Irish Derby evolved to the fullest and something like the Classic was brought to the next level.
And racing quality in general also improved because of the presence of Paddy Power Bookmakers. Worth mentioning of course is the amazing 2009 victory of College Causeway that might just go down as one of the all-time great track performances in relation to the bookmakers’ presence.
For many greyhound racing fans and even bettors, the Paddy Power Bookmakers should have not ended up making a decision like such, to actually don’t give support to the 2010 Irish Derby. The Irish Greyhound Board will find it hard, in a way, to actually make the said event possible considering that that Government funding of greyhound racing was decided to be cut by 13 percent in the Budget.
The Government funding of greyhound racing was decided to be cut just about two weeks ago before the news about Paddy Power Bookmakers dropping Irish Derby sponsorship surprised many greyhound racing fans and even bettors. Indeed not the right time for the Irish Derby to lose a sponsor.
