Mantra Lad Dominated in the Group 2 Sale Cup Despite Lack of Preparation

Mantra LadMantra Lad is no doubt a champion greyhound as he was able to win in the Group 2 Sale Cup though without sufficient preparation. The event was on Boxing Day and it was just the superstar’s day.

The Greame Jose-trained racer indeed had what seemed to be a great edge for much of the 650-metre race, however it looked like he had to hold off a strikingly bold late challenge from Next Top Model before having the first prize of $50,000 by just three quarters of a length. Because of his win, his career stake earnings instantly went up to $397,365.

“It was a race against time to get him right for the final. He injured his calf in his heat win six days earlier so I couldn’t exercise him at all during the week as he needed rest. Ideally I like to give him a gallop in between races, and without that gallop he was a bit underdone…but his heart got him over the line”, said Mantra Lad’s trainer Graeme Jose.

At this point, the champion greyhound has recorded 52 starts for 24 wins and 16 placings. However, he is confirmed to be retiring to stud. But before it happens, he is likely to race for at least once or even for few more.

Mantra Lad is now set for the heats of the $50,000 to-the winner Group 1 Association Cup that will take place in Sydney this month. It is a one good race for him as it gives him the chance to be a step closer to the prize money record set way back in 1998, the Rapid Journey’s all-time Australian prize money record of $530,995. It will be a great achievement for him if ever he win in the event. He might be retiring to stud but he will do so with so great pride if ever.
