Greyhound betting is now on great trial. With a dropping number of greyhounds registered in the racing industry, greyhound betting might be on its lowest point.
For the record, the number of greyhounds registered in the racing industry has dropped from 39,139 in 1993 to 20,227 in 2007. For this year, number might even drop below 20,000, according to a National Greyhound Association registry.
Because of the significant drop in figures with regards to the number of greyhounds registered, number of states that offer live greyhound racing has also dropped from 40 to 33 thus causing some bettors to lose interest on greyhound betting.
Bettors have justifiable reason, a drop of 40 to 33 is really significant. Just last year, large tracks in Wichita, Kan., and Tampa, Fla., closed. Last June, Mile High Greyhound Park discontinued racing. Then this was followed by The Woodlands Dog Track in Kansas City in August.
Because of these problems, many now ask why is this all happening. Well, Tim Horan with the National Greyhound Association believes that everything was all because of simple competition. “It rages from casino riverboats to expansion football teams – anything that’s fighting for entertainment dollars”, said Horan.
Also, it’s been said that having weak economies is also to be blamed. Although according to the records of NGA, adopted greyhounds has steadily risen, from 20,000 in 2005 to about 26,500 in 2007, some adoption farms in various states with weak economies faltered. These farms have closed and stopped operations. Thus, affecting number of greyhounds that may be workable to fit in greyhound racing.
