Trainer Bruce Drake is just one of the many trainers in the world of greyhound racing who have been into the ebbs of the fickle world. And the reason, well, it has just something to do with losing chances for a win due to injuries and break downs of some dogs under own care.
For the record, Drake has already lost four dogs in the past six months all because of injuries and break downs. Most likely, he has then already lost lots of chances for a win.
Drake must have been feeling so low now because of losing four dogs in just a short period of time and of course, losing lots of chances for a win. But then, fate has something good that in store for him, so the trainer feels otherwise now.
In Hobart last Thursday night, well-bred bitch Proven Shiraz gave Drake a brilliant debut. She managed to make light of the squeeze box 5 to get a lead all the way to beat Capetown Terra by a length, with Winklee Weeper more than four lengths behind.
Drake seemed delighted with the surprise, he said, “this is a welcome change of luck for us because we’ve lost so many good prospects recently through injury”, and that “we’ve only had her in the kennel two months but she is a welcome addition”.
According to Drake, box manners of Shiraz are impeccable and for this, she will be good as she goes through the grades. Seems really a good thing for the trainer.
“Provided she stays sound there’s no reason why she can’t win a few in quick succession because of her immaculate box manners”, said by Drake. And that, in addition, “there is plenty of improvement in her and if she does what we expect then she’ll probably end up back in Victoria”, he said.
